Fiddle Leaf Fig Care Guide

Don’t let these notoriously tricky Fiddle-leaf Fig plants fool you.. Even you can keep one alive, and I’m going to tell you exactly how.

Fiddle-Leaf Fig plants are one of the most Instagram worthy houseplants known to woman. This incredible plant comes in a variety of sizes ranging from tabletop to shady-front-porch tree. Fiddle leaf fig’s are members of the Mulberry and Fig tree family. Native to areas in Africa where they grow wild in hot, shady rainforest bottoms.

Having background information about a plant and where they’re indigenous to should give you a common-sense view of how to care for your indoor houseplants.

SUN

Taking into consideration that they flourish in the bottom, shady parts of rainforests, start by picking an area of your home that doesn’t receive much (if any) direct sunlight through a window.

If you are the kind of person who keeps your home chilly, a Fiddle Fig will have a hard time adjusting to the cold, dry climate. If your house is an icebox, put a humidifier next to your fiddle fig once a week so that it can soak up some intense humidity.

I know, that is some crazy plant lady stuff! If you have a Fiddle-leaf fig that is a smaller variety, you could easily sit it on the bathroom counter while you take a hot steamy shower and your plant will receive the same effect. This is totally optional, but once I started giving my Fiddle-leaf Fig’s some additional humidity, they THRIVED!

I’ve literally kept my biggest Fiddle-leaf Fig in the same spot in my West-facing sunroom for 2 years and it couldn’t be happier. You can rotate your pot by a quarter each week when you water it if you want to get serious. Just make sure you put it back in its home where its acclimated to the sunlight.

SOIL

Fiddle Fig Leaf plants do best in medium-to-fast draining soil in pots with drainage holes.

These aesthetically pleasing plants love to be pot-bound. This means they prefer living in a small pot so that the roots are tightly curled up together. When the roots begin coming out of the drainage holes in the bottom, it’s time to move your Fiddle Fig to a new pot.

Decor Tip: leave your Fiddle Fig in the black planter’s plastic pot it comes in and just place that directly in a woven basket. Boho Chic in a snap. (Also makes watering easier)

WATER

I recommend watering your Fiddle Fig Leaf plant once a week (9-10 days is actually my preferred timeline for the Fiddle Figs) maximum in the winter, twice a week max in the summer, and make sure to really soak it. I like to drag my big one outside and use the hose to really douse it. When you notice the leaves are drooping and heavy or start curling up, it is time to water.

I water all my plants with Miracle Gro once a month.
