Here is my advice to help you navigate the system:

  1. Purchase a ticket or a pass: You can purchase tickets or passes at the automated machines located in all metro stations. You can purchase a single ticket for less than 2€, or you can purchase a “carnet” (booklet) of 10 tickets if you plan to use the metro frequently.

  2. Plan your route: Use the metro map (pickup a free one in the station) or your cell-phone map to plan your route before you get on the metro. The official Paris metro map is posted in all the stations or download it here before you leave.

    Good to know:

    • Each line has a color and number.

    • Line directions are indicated by the station at the end of each line, which is shown on signs on the platform and on maps. So, look at the very last stop of the line that you’re going to take, and that’s the direction you will need to go. (example: Green Line 12 runs from Northeast Mairie d’Aubervilliers to southern Mairie d’Issay).

  3. Validate your ticket: To get on the metro with the tickets you purchased, you need have to get through the gates. Insert your ticket machine, it will be stamped with the date and time, and will pop back out of the machine for you to grab.

  4. Safety Tips: Watch your belongings! Pickpocketing can be an issue on the Paris metro especially if you’re coming from the airport. Don’t have money, passports, wallets, valuables, etc. in open pockets or easily accessible zipper pockets. Backpacks are easy targets.

The Paris metro is so convenient and affordable. I would hate for you miss out on learning this valuable information that saved me SO much energy and money on my solo trip. Would have been helpful to know the times Jacob and I piled on 15 mile days while in Paris! Just be sure to plan ahead, stay aware of your surroundings, and follow the rules and etiquette of the system.
